John & Martha King

John and Martha King

John and Martha King´s use of technology and clear, simple, and fun teaching have made aviation knowledge more accessible to pilots throughout the world.

After a dismal failure in a business for which they did not have a passion, John and Martha King decided to relax and indulge their love of flying for a while. In the early 1970s, they began teaching flying to mark time while looking for a "serious business." After teaching live seminars for over a decade they put their courses on video and began to revolutionize the flight training industry.

Today their company, King Schools, Inc which started in a spare bedroom in the Kings´ house, operates out of a dedicated complex in San Diego, California that includes a video and software production facility.

Over 50 years, King Schools has delivered many millions of courses to pilots in training. Through intimate video instruction John and Martha King have taught more pilots than anyone in the history of aviation—for many years teaching more than half the pilots in the United States learning to fly. It's no surprise that pilots throughout the world know John and Martha and regard them as their personal aviation mentors.

King Schools continues to transform pilot training by pioneering the development of multimedia training programs on many aviation subjects including ground-breaking programs on aviation risk management.

Through the years, the Kings have retained their enthusiasm for flying. They fly their own Dassault Falcon 10 jet wherever they go, swapping captain and copilot duties on each leg. They have flown as pilots in every continent of the world except Antarctica, including a trip completely around the world via the length of Russia.

In 2022, John and Martha accomplished another of their goals and released their book LIFT: How to Start, Run and Grow Your Own Successful Business, sharing how they pursued their passion for flying by starting their business of teaching pilots. (see more)

In 2023, John and Martha continued their publishing efforts and released their second book - Sky Kings: Flying Adventures with John & Martha, sharing their passion for flying and evocative stories generated over decades of experience. (see more)

Barry Knuttila

Barry Knuttila, CEO of King Schools

In 2002 Barry found himself a refugee from corporate America. His head was still spinning after one minute being a successful Vice President in a billion-dollar, publicly traded software company, and in the next minute being on the street after suffering a devesting crash that sent the company’s CEO to jail.

Barry needed a change, and as a passionate pilot, gave himself the gift of two years to work in aviation improving King Schools’ technology, and doing a lot of flying before looking for his next “real job”. That was 22 years ago, and he has given up looking…What he found at King Schools was a company run on meaningful and compassionate principals, important mentorship and a deep passion for teaching that continues to drive him toward helping learning pilots succeed throughout their flying lifetime.

As CEO and Co-Owner, Barry guides King Schools strategy and growth, and appears regularly as an on-camera instructor in King’s video courses. Teaching is something he has always enjoyed, but Barry never imagined being able to help so many pilots learn through the magic of streaming video that can be viewed from anywhere in the world and downloaded to personal devices for viewing offline.

Barry holds a Flight Instructor Certificate with ratings for single and multiengine airplanes and instrument instruction. He also holds an Airline Transport Pilot Certificate with a Falcon 10 jet type rating and commercial seaplane, and private helicopter privileges.

Over the years, Barry has logged time in 45 different aircraft types including introducing tour passengers to aerobatic, formation and air combat flights, along with his partners in 3 Great Lakes biplanes. He and his wife, Virginie, also love flying their Beechcraft Debonair.

Barry especially enjoys trading seats with John and Martha in King Schools’ old Falcon 10 jet and lately also with his wife, who is a professional jet charter pilot. But, as much fun as it is flying an old, hot, swept-wing French jet, when asked what airplane Barry likes best, his answer is usually still whichever one he’s flown last.

Barry is far from running out of items on his list of flying aspirations, as well as growth opportunities for King Schools and fully expects the next 22 years to be the best yet!
