In this video, we will discuss ground school and different options to prepare for your Private Pilot written exam.
How to Prepare for Your Private Pilot Knowledge Test
This installment of the How to Become a Pilot series focuses on the Private Pilot Knowledge Test. Earning a strong score is an important milestone in your training, and preparation is key.
The process can be broken into four clear steps:
Step 1: Obtain your Federal Tracking Number (FTN)
Your FTN is created by registering on the IACRA website. If you have followed this series, you completed this step in Episode 4. If not, register now, since your FTN is required for all FAA testing.
Step 2: Complete ground school and prepare for the test
A solid understanding of aeronautical knowledge is essential before attempting the exam.
Step 3: Obtain an endorsement to take the exam
This endorsement verifies that you are prepared and authorized to sit for the test.
Step 4: Schedule your test at an FAA-approved testing center
Once endorsed, locate a nearby testing center, schedule your appointment, and take your exam.
Your Ground School Options
Ground school is the foundation of your knowledge test preparation. You have three primary paths to choose from:
Option 1: Self-study with textbooks
Some students prefer traditional book learning. Several publishers offer reliable study materials, but a great starting point is the
FAA’s Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge. This method is budget-friendly, but your test preparation tools may be limited.
Option 2: In-person classroom courses
Many flight schools and colleges offer classroom-based ground school. This is a good option for students who learn best in a structured, instructor-led environment. However, it is typically less flexible and may be difficult to fit into a busy schedule.
Video-based courses provide flexibility, convenience, and comprehensive test preparation.
King Schools offers a fully integrated home study program that includes both
ground school and robust test prep software. If you choose this route, the system can also generate the endorsement you need to take your test. This option tends to work well for students with varying schedules and those who prefer to learn at their own pace.
Obtaining Your Endorsement
After completing ground school and test preparation, your instructor will issue an endorsement confirming you are ready for the exam. If you complete an online course through King Schools, the software can create this endorsement automatically based on your performance.
Scheduling and Taking the Test
Next,
locate an FAA-approved testing center in your area and schedule your appointment. Bring your photo ID, knowledge test endorsement, and Federal Tracking Number. The test consists of 60 questions, and you will have two hours to complete it. A score of 70 percent or higher is required to pass.
Effective preparation involves more than memorizing answers. Focus on understanding the underlying concepts and principles. A strong grasp of the material will not only help you excel on the knowledge test but will also prepare you for the open-ended questions your examiner will ask during the practical test. Most importantly, deeper understanding builds the foundation of a safe and confident pilot in command.
